Tis the season of pumpkin spice lattes, colorful leaves, and bon fires. It is also a special time of year where I like to celebrate the autumnal equinox! Summer is always a blast, but as a south Texan I am never sad to see it go. The first day of fall marks an end to our suffering in the south. It means I can finally enjoy being outdoors without risking death by heatstroke. The other great thing is that it’s almost time for Halloween and Thanksgiving!
On a metaphysical level this time of the years signals the descent into the dark half of the year. It marks the arrival of a period of rest, reflection, and conservation. I like to honor the energy of this season to reflect on my year’s progress and adjust as needed. I am also using the energy of this time to clear out what’s no longer contributing to my progression.
To honor the season last year, I burned cinnamon candles, and baked a loaf of honey wheat bread. This year I kept it simple and made a playlist to celebrate the autumnal equinox. If you’re wondering “How can I celebrate the autumnal equinox?” here’s a short playlist to help.
“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.”
10. Carlos Santana – Black Magic Woman
Santana’s classic ode to all the wiccas, brujas, and hoodoo ladies is the perfect spooky season song.
9. Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon
Is it really fall without Fleetwood Mac and a Stevie Nicks? American Horror Story: Coven was basically a tribute to her.
8. Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear The Reaper
It doesn’t get any more spooky than the Grim Reaper.
7. Gil Heron Scott – Me and the Devil
The title of this song speaks for itself.
6. Donvan – Season of the Witch
No other time of year conjures up imagery of witches like autumn.
6. Pink Floyd – Careful With That Axe, Eugene
5. Moody Blues – Nights in White Satin
A sexy song for the coming long and dark night.
4. Lissie – Mother (Danzig cover)
3. Coltrane & Hartman – Autumn Serenade
A little less depressing, and creepy than the previous song
2. Led Zeppelin – Tangerine
1. Cinematic Orchestra – Arrival of the Birds
To me this beautiful song sounds like the changing seasons if they were put to music.
